Honda Civic Mugen Si Sedan

The Honda Civic Si, one of the best values in performance, gets updated bodywork and some new electronics to keep it competitive for the 2009 model year. None of these changes are drastic--just a few add-ons and styling to comport with Honda's new look--because the Civic Si doesn't need much changed. It gives extraordinary driving pleasure, as it has since the introduction of the 2-liter engine version in 2002.

The 2009 Honda Civic Si evolves the design introduced in 2005, introducing a more angular grille with diamond-pattern inset. But the basic silhouette is the same, at least in our coupe model test car. Welcome additions to the cabin tech are a USB port in the console and a Bluetooth hands-free cell phone system.

Honda JDM Civic Type R

The JDM Civic Type R's cockpit is all business. "Honda R-spec" seats (which look an awful lot like the EK's Recaros) keep the front occupants in place while extra side bolsters on the rear bench keep back seat passengers from flying all over the place while running the C1 loop. The Civic Type R keeps the "love-it-or-hate-it" two-tiered dash; we love it, so we're glad it's staying. Rounding out the Type R package is a push-button starter, navigation screen delete and drilled aluminum pedals. Civic R buyers can opt for the black and red interior color scheme or the more subdued all-black interior. We'd opt for "all black", but that's just 'cause everyone we know with Type R-red Recaros have had their cars stolen...

Honda Civic Type S

It is little wonder hot hatches are so popular in the UK; fast, practical and very stylish, they offer performance motoring for everyman money. That is until you look at insurance and fuel economy, both of which prove that everything has its downsides. But what are the options if you want a hot hatch without these wallet-ruining side effects? The answer lies not in doing more overtime at work, and instead in switching to diesel. Because today’s modern diesel engines are refined, quick and very frugal – and Honda’s 2.2-CDTi unit is one of the best. What we want to know is does it make a viable alternative to the Civic Type-R when dressed in sporting Type-S guise.

Honda Civic Type-R

The Honda Civic Type-R: an uncompromising hot hatch with great performance. That may have been true for the first-generation model, but Honda has listened carefully to feedback from its customers and this time around, the Type-R's is considerably easier to live with on a day-to-day basis.

Honda is at pains to insist that this doesn't mean the Type-R's gone soft, though. There's 198bhp on offer from the 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine and performance has not been watered down: 0-62mph still comes up in 6.6 seconds and top speed is a pretty healthy 146mph, should you have access to a track or an airstrip to fully test this out. It's also actually more rewarding at lower engine speeds: since the maximum torque of 142lb-ft now peaks at 5,600rpm, rather than at 6,500rpm, in-gear acceleration has been improved, and you can make swift progress without having to set the engine screaming. Well, not quite so loudly, anyway.

The Civic Type-R comes in three-door form only, with a choice of standard or GT specification levels: the GT pack adds front fog lights, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, side curtain airbags, a lockable glovebox, power-folding door mirrors and automatic headlights.
